2. We ask the oldest person in the room “Do we have your permission to begin this celebration?” We do this as a sign of respect for the elders. Permission is given with a simple, “Yes, you have my permission” Then the activities may begin.

3. Each night we light a candle. We begin with the black one in the center. This candle is lit first every night and used to light the others. On the second night a red one candle is lit. On the third night the two candles which were lit before are re-lit and a green one is added. Each night all the previous candles are re-lit and an additional candle is lit, alternating red and green, until all seven are ablaze on night seven. If the room is darkened for this activity, the lighting ceremony is more dramatic.
